Chapter One - My chapbook

Chapter One  - The father leaves the family

Sebastian is a kid from a rich Polish family. Mother owns summer cottages for rent plus she owns a sanatorium for the elderly and a restaurant chain. Unfortunately, his father left him and his mother when he was 9 years old. It was hard for him to accept this fact. This event had a profound effect on his psyche.

Before his father left, Sebastian was very attached to him. He loved his father more than anything in the world. They were fishing together. Father went to Sebastian's soccer games. They played together, his father helped him with his homework. There was no indication that he would suddenly go away and leave the mother with the child. He and his mother also seemed to get along great, they went to parties together. They looked like a loving family. Unfortunately, they only looked like that. Because when no one could see behind closed doors, they still argued. They hadn't slept together in about two years. Sebastian's mother didn't want to do that with him. Sometimes his  father sought solace by going to a prostitute.

Sebastian's father was also a very smart and greedy businessman. He owned several chemical stores. His stores were located in several major Polish cities. He probably wanted to leave because he was tired of living without the love of his mother. And for years he kept it to himself. They were both very busy, which undoubtedly contributed to his decision.

It was Sunday. The day Sebastian's father decided to tell his mother that he was leaving. But he did it in a very ugly way. First, he decided to drink vodka. He swallowed more glasses. After about five shots he had decided to insult his mother. Sebastian, standing in the doorway, saw it. His parents were arguing a lot, not behind closed doors, but in front of the child. Finally his father exploded inside and said he was leaving. Sebastian began to cry. The mother was distraught. After a while, a scuffle broke out between the parents. Enraged, the father threw a glass of vodka at the mother, and the mother ran to the kitchen and grabbed the pans. She then chased and called him names around the apartment and even once hit him on the head with a frying pan. Blood was flowing from his father's head. He warned the woman that if she did it again, he would call the police. Mother calmed down. However, Sebastian was crying in the middle of the room. His Father suddenly came out and slammed the door so hard it almost broke the doorframe. The poor and distraught mother tried to comfort her son. So they sat huddled in the middle of the room for some time and cried together. Meanwhile, the frustrated father got into the car and drove off. The only sound from inside the house was the screeching of tires.

Sometime later Sebastian's mother received a letter which was a divorce petition. The case dragged on for several months. In the end, the couple went to a settlement. They agreed that Sebestaian's father would pay child support. Sebastian loved his father very much, but he decided to leave. He cut off all contact with his family. He only sent money. It's as if he's stopped loving his son. He didn't even want to see him for some unknown reason. A great sadness began to build up in Sebastian.

Charles Dickens - Research

Charles Dickens was a famous writer who wrote many books that people still love to read today. He wrote stories that talked about how unfair society can be and how people can be treated badly because of where they come from or how much money they have. But he also wrote stories that showed how important things like friendship, love, and kindness are.

Dickens was born in 1812 in a town called Portsmouth, England. He grew up in a family that didn't have much money and didn't go to school for very long. But he worked hard and became a famous writer. His first big success was a book called "The Pickwick Papers," which people loved. After that, he wrote many other famous books like "Oliver Twist," "David Copperfield," and "Great Expectations."

Dickens wrote stories that are still important today. They show us how we should treat other people and remind us that everyone deserves to be treated fairly. His characters, like Ebenezer Scrooge from "A Christmas Carol," are famous all around the world. They remind us that even if we make mistakes or do bad things, we can always change and be better people.

In summary, Charles Dickens was an important writer who wrote stories that people still love to read today. He wrote about important things like fairness, kindness, and friendship, and his stories still inspire us to be better people.

                                 Charles Dickens

In addition to his work as a writer, Dickens was also a social activist and philanthropist. He used his fame and wealth to help the less fortunate and bring attention to issues such as child labor, prison reform, and education for the poor. He also supported various charities and causes throughout his life.

Despite his success and fame, Dickens experienced personal challenges and difficulties, including a difficult childhood, a failed marriage, and financial struggles. These experiences influenced his writing and gave his characters a depth and complexity that many readers find relatable and compelling.

Dickens' writing has had a lasting impact on literature and popular culture. His works have been adapted into countless stage productions, movies, and television series. He is also credited with helping to establish the modern Christmas traditions with his famous story "A Christmas Carol."

In recognition of his contributions to literature, Dickens was buried in Westminster Abbey, a rare honor for a non-royal figure. His legacy as a writer and social activist continues to inspire and influence people today.

Project on creative writing. Developing Ideas

It's time to create a book now that the Urban Photography Project has concluded. We're going to be working on a chapbook for the next two weeks.

A chapbook is a type of small, inexpensive, illustrated book or booklet, popular in the 17th to 19th centuries in England and the United States. Chapbooks were often sold by peddlers, or chapmen, and were used to entertain, educate, or inform people, especially those who were illiterate or lived in rural areas. They typically contained popular ballads, tales, fables, or religious and moral stories, and were printed on cheap paper and bound with plain or decorated paper covers. The term "chapbook" is derived from the name given to the itinerant salesmen who sold these books.

Little Red Riding Hood - Chapbook from 1810

My idea

The main character, let's call him Sebastian, whose father left him when he was young and was raised by his mother, decided to start his adventure with seducing women. After many failures in relationships, he decides to uncover the secrets of seduction and begins his long journey to self-improvement.

Sebastian dedicates a lot of time and effort to become an expert in relationships and seduction. He quickly gains popularity as a personal development coach and begins to teach others how to win the hearts of women.

However, one day, Sebastian falls in love and starts a family. It seems like everything is perfect, but quickly his life is full of problems. His career as a personal development coach starts to decline and his relationship with his wife deteriorates.

Sebastian starts to lose hope and falls into depression. He feels that his life is empty and hopeless. But eventually, he realizes his mistakes and starts to strive for self-improvement in order to regain his life and relationship with his wife.

Sebastian's story is not just about his experiences but also about how important it is to continuously improve and learn from one's own mistakes in order to find happiness and fulfillment in life.

Research Photographer - Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon was a highly regarded and influential American photographer, born in New York City on May 15, 1923, and passing away in San Antonio, Texas, on October 1, 2004. He was well known for his fashion, portrait, and advertising photography, and often utilized a single plane and a bright background to draw attention to his subjects.

Avedon was also renowned for his powerful and thought-provoking portraits, which showed people without any filters or artifice. This style of photography inspired other photographers to strive for truth and emotion in their work.

If we are seeking to be inspired by Avedon's work and improve our own photography, we could start by experimenting with a single foreground and a bright background, and focusing on capturing truth and emotion in your shots.

Richard Avedon was regarded as one of the most prominent and influential photographers during his time. He frequently explored themes of identity and individuality in his work, and introduced new techniques and perspectives to photography.

One of his renowned projects was the "Obsession" series of portraits, where he focused on capturing individuals from various social and professional backgrounds, such as actors, artists, politicians, and criminals. Avedon presented his subjects truthfully, without retouching or acting, revealing their true selves and emotions.

Other examples of his work include his series for the Calvin Klein brand, showcasing models against a bright background, and his "In the American West" portrait series, where he photographed people living in the Western United States.

Avedon's work is considered significant and inspiring for modern photographers and is often displayed and sold at art auctions.

I am posting some of his works below.

Ronald Fischer, beekeeper, Davis, California, May 9, 1981

The photograph of Ronald Fischer, a beekeeper from Davis, California taken on May 9, 1981, is part of Richard Avedon's renowned series titled "In the American West". In this series, Avedon captured portraits of a diverse range of people residing in the Western states of the USA, including farmers, educators, dishonest businessmen, and others. The image of Ronald Fischer shows a  man , surrounded by a group of bees. This picture is a typical example of Avedon's style, blending a raw and straightforward approach with an intimate and emotional message.

Nastassja Kinski, actress, Los Angeles, June 14, 1981

Richard Avedon captured a portrait of actress Nastassja Kinski, taken on June 14, 1981 in Los Angeles. This is part of Avedon's 1980s series of portraits of famous and unknown people. The portrait shows a young girl lying naked on the ground. There is a live snake on the girl. Avedon's minimalist style and emotional message are conveyed in this portrait.

Architecture photography

A week ago we were taking pictures of architecture in the city of Leicester. We went for a 2 hour walk around the city. Below I put a contact sheet and a selection of four photos. All photos were taken with Nikon Z6 camera with Sigma Art 35 mm 1.4 lens.

I like the first photo because of the interesting building painted in stripes. I also like the reflection of the light from the skyscraper that is behind in the background.

    35mm  F/10  1/200 s ISO 100

For the next picture I liked the inscription on the street, I took this picture vertically. The street was empty

                              35mm  F/8 1/200 s ISO 100

The next photo shows the facade of the building, which is made of interesting metal window sills.

    35mm  F/8  1/50 s  ISO 100

I liked the last photo I chose not only because of the architecture but also because of the light coming from between the buildings.

Creative Writing Exercise 1

Sadness

You have left an imprint on my memory

And you went without saying anything

I have nothing but sadness inside of me

I have nothing but memories of those days

The day came when we had to say goodbye

The day came for which I was not ready

Now the emptiness in me digs its claws

Sadness attacks my soul like torpedoes

Michael worked in a warehouse and drove a forklift truck. Unfortunately, one day he was fired, which devastated him, and he ended up on the street, where he began dealing drugs.

For many years, Michael worked as a warehouse worker in a local company. His job mainly involved packing and moving goods using a forklift truck. Although his job was monotonous, he enjoyed a stable income and the routine of his daily life.

However, one day, after several years of work, Michael was fired due to downsizing in the company. It broke Michael's heart, as he had become very attached to his job. Without a steady source of income, he was unable to maintain his previous lifestyle.

Michael began to lose hope and fall into depression. Disheartened, he eventually ended up on the street, with nowhere to live and no food to eat. In this hopeless situation, he began to think about how to quickly make money.

Finally, Michael was lured by a drug dealer who offered him the opportunity to make a lot of money selling drugs. Initially, Michael rejected the offer, but over time, he became more convinced of it. Desperate and neglecting his previous values, Michael finally decided to join the illegal business.

Michael began selling drugs and quickly started earning a lot of money. Although he knew it was illegal and unethical, his need for money and corruption dominated him. However, he quickly began to have problems with the police and unrest in his neighborhood.

Eventually, after several months, Michael was arrested and imprisoned. There, he realized how much he had ruined his life and how much he had paid for his decision. Although he hoped that when he got out of prison, he would have a chance for a new beginning, he was already corrupted and destroyed by his past.

What was once a stable source of income and routine for him ultimately led to his downfall and troubles. Michael learned from his own example that the wrong choice and lack of values can lead to ruining one's life.

Iwan Baan - architecture photographer

In this post, I would like to introduce Iwan Baan

                                              Photo from: www.ted.com

Iwan Baan, a Dutch architectural photographer, was born on February 8, 1975, in Alkmaar, Netherlands. He revivified the historically static art of photographing structures by using unexpected angles, the presence of people, and movement. Baan got his first camera on his 12th birthday. From then on, he started taking pictures.(www.britannica.com)

In addition to Steven Holl and Zaha Hadid, Baan has worked for notable architecture firms including SANAA, Rem Koolhaas / OMA, Herzog & de Meuron, and Toyo Ito. Iwan's work has been featured in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Architectural Record, Domus, Abitare, and Architectural Digest in addition to his architecture commissions. (www.daylightandarchitecture.com)

Iwan Baan celebrates the relationship between structures and their surroundings in all of his work. His photographs skillfully insert architectural structures into a local cultural context rather than focusing on them as standalone objects. Baan's photographs of architecture have a particularly approachable aspect thanks to their humanistic perspective. (www.daylightandarchitecture.com)

On YouTube, on the TEDx channel, we can watch an interesting lecture by Ivan on architectural photography.

Below are some interesting photos of Ivan.

Promoting Myself to Employees: Target Market

In this post I wanted to focus on finding a job as a photographer. So I did some research on job offers in the UK.

Promo film on wix.com

I looked through a dozen or so advertisements for jobs as a photographer and selected the most important skills.

  • 1. A creative spirit
  • 2. Proficiency with photographic principles
  • 3.The ability to use a variety of cameras and lenses
  • 4.To stay current with evolving technology
  • 5. The capacity for meeting deadlines
  • 6. A keen sense of shape, color, and form
  • 7. Effective communication abilities
  • 8. Expertise with digital technology and imaging programmes
  • 9. Effective organisation techniques
  • 10. A strong portfolio
  • 11. Social media skills
Looking through the offers, I noticed that many employers are looking for people with experience. As an additional skill for the photographer, it is expected that he/she will also be able to shoot and edit films.
In the future, I would like to develop my photographic skills even more, as well as learn how to shoot and edit films. It is very important to me to improve my communication skills in English so that I can work freely with different people around the world. As I have my own photography business. I am an event photographer. I cooperate with many event organizers. After graduation, it will be easier for me to find a great job. Because I have real experience. But I know I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Biteable video

Last week we made short videos promoting ourselves. We used the Biteable tool for this. This is an interesting website that helps us quickly create a promotional video. Such a video can be sent later to the future employer. This may be a better option than the classic cover letter.

At first, I chose the topic of my video. There is a lot to choose from and there is something for everyone. I chose the topic of Craig Russell.

Then I edited the text that you can freely create. I added my first and last name. I added information about what I do. I am interested in working as a photographer. In individual scenes I added my skills that characterize me the most.

Later I changed the background from blue to yellow. Instead of Craig's picture, I put my picture. I also removed the images dedicated to the topic. Instead, I put videos and photos that show my skills in a more interesting way.

After finishing editing, I published my video.

In the paid version it is possible to download your own video. Otherwise, we are forced to have Biteable.com advertising in the published material. Unfortunately, this is the downside of this tool.

I posted this video on my website. You can see it at this link. https://bartoszdmu.wixsite.com/myotherlook/general-clean-1

Yesterday's photos around the DMU campus

Yesterday we practiced photography walking around the DMU campus. This is the result of my work.

I've included a contact sheet below.

From among the photos, I chose four that I like the most. All photos were taken with a Nikon Z6 camera and a Sigma ART 35 mm 1.4 lens bought yesterday.

    35mm F/1.4  1/2000 ISO 200

A random photo of a dog in the style of Henri Cartier Bresson. The dog is blurry and the background is sharp.

    35 mm F/1.4 1/160 ISO 400

Another photo of two boys coming down the stairs.

    35mm F/3.2 1/80 ISO 400

I like the next photos of girls sitting in front of the computer because it is taken from an unobvious perspective. The architecture of the building is shown.

    35 mm F/1.4 1/160 ISO 400

Last photo. this is a photo of a screwdriver and a worker in the background. The screwdriver is sharp and the worker is blurry in the picture.

Welcome to Spring Term 2023!

Welcome to the new term. I am very exited about new academic semester. I hope it will be time intensive study and practice.

James Cameron

I would like to start this term by introducing one of the artist I admire. It is film director James Cameron whose new film premiered at the end of 2022. The title of the movie is Avatar: The way of Water. This director is one of my favourites. I've always admired the special effects he creates. They are very realistic. This director uses both practical and computer effects.

                                            Photo from: www.digitalspy.com

James Cameron was born in Canada. His family moved to America when he was a child. It was there that Cameron began to become more closely involved with cinema.

Stanley Kubrick's 2001:A Space Odyssey' made a special impression on him and he watched this movie soo many times . Inspired by this picture, he made his first film and began experimenting with special effects. He enrolled in college but soon dropped out, got married and started working as a truck driver. But the job wasn't right for him. He loved working as a film director so much that he decided to try his hand again. He was strongly inspired to return by George Lucas' Star Wars film. He returned to his models and renewed his work on perfecting special effects techniques. This activity drew the attention of people at New World Pictures, who decided to entrust him with directing the film "Piranha II". However, the film was not a great success. Only some time later he created the movie "Terminator", which turned out to be a great success. Since that film, Cameron has been regarded as one of Hollywood's highest-grossing filmmakers. His next 4 films "Terminator 2", "True Lies" and "Titanic" and "Avatar" turned out to be hits of all time. It is also one of the most expensive films in the history of cinema. (Filmweb.pl)

Cameron also has a lot of credit in the field of special effects. He developed or improved many of them himself. In 1993, he founded Digital Domain, a company that specializes in this.( Filmweb.pl)

I'm going to see the new Avatar in the cinema soon. I'm very excited about what James Cameron has come up with.

I am proud to present my first video, which I recorded and edited on my own. No matter what grade I get I know that I worked hard and spent ...
